Loukia is a proud young woman, a descendant of a family which, thanks to a lingering vendetta, has almost died out. Although she is in love with Alexis, the last offspring of the rival family, who has just returned to the village, she decides to kill him. On the other hand, Alexis (who left the village after his father killed Loukias' father) studied and became a teacher in Athens and has returned to his village in order to teach the village children. He does not wish to deal with the past, not even to pay his "debt", as his mother urges him to do.
