While his kingdom is crumbling around him, King Berenger is being informed that he is dying. He has lost the power to control his surroundings and he is slowly losing his physical capabilities as well. In denial, however, he refuses to give up power. Berenger's first wife and the doctor tries to make Berenger face the reality, while his second wife sympathetically attempts to keep him from the pain of knowing about his imminent death.
