Harlan Douglas Whatley，Harlan received his B.A. in English from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. While an undergraduate, he acted in local television commercials with O'Neal Compton and Orlando Jones. After moving to New York City in 1990, he studied video making at the Millennium Film Workshop and screenwriting at the Gotham Writer's Workshop.
